Copywork Sheets (handwriting practice)
Turn a poem, a classic passage or any text you paste into printable copywork pages to trace or copy by hand, on ruled lines, squares or vertical columns, in the font you choose

Makes printable pages for copying text by hand: a poem, a classic passage or anything you paste. Trace light gray letters, copy each line onto an empty line below, or write on a blank grid, also in vertical columns for Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
How to use
- Under "Text", choose "Example texts" and pick one from "Literature" or "Religion", or choose "My own text" and paste any text.
- Choose the "Mode", the "Writing guide" and the "Direction", or use one of the "Quick layouts".
- Pick a "Font", or choose "My own font file" and load a TTF, OTF, WOFF or WOFF2 file from your device.
- Adjust the square size, letter size, paper and header fields, check the preview, then press "Print".
How it works
- Each line of the text starts a new line on the sheet; long texts continue over several pages (up to 100 are shown). In vertical writing, commas and full stops move to the upper right of the square and brackets turn sideways.
- The built-in fonts are open-licence fonts (SIL Open Font License) stored on this site; only the parts with the characters in use are downloaded. Characters missing from the chosen font are drawn with another font. Your own font file stays on this device.
- All example texts are in the public domain. Settings are saved in this browser.
Questions and answers
- How do I make a Heart Sutra copying sheet with 17 characters per column?
- Press "Sutra copying: vertical, 17 per column". It sets vertical writing, ruled columns and landscape paper; the whole Heart Sutra fits on one landscape A4 page.
- Can I use a font installed on my computer?
- Choose "My own font file" and select the font file. The file is read in the browser and is not uploaded.
- What is the difference between Trace and Copy below?
- "Trace" prints the text in light gray to write over. "Copy below" prints each line in dark ink with an empty line under it for your own copy.
- Why are some characters in a different font?
- The chosen font does not contain them, for example Chinese characters in a Korean font. Choose a font made for that script to use one style throughout.
