Loading the tool…
Works out how many rolls of wallpaper a room needs from its walls, doors and windows, the roll size and the pattern repeat.
How to use
- Under "Measure by", choose "Whole room" and enter "Room length", "Room width" and "Wall height", or choose "Wall by wall".
- Set the number and size of doors and windows, and switch on "Paper the ceiling too" if needed.
- Pick a "Roll size" or type the "Roll width" and "Roll length" from the label, then set the "Pattern repeat" and "Pattern match".
- Read "Rolls to buy" and "How it was calculated". For several rooms, press "Add this room to the list", then "Print" or copy the list.
How it works
- By strips (the default): strips = wall perimeter ÷ roll width, rounded up; strips per roll = roll length ÷ strip length, rounded down. A strip is the wall height plus trim, rounded up to whole repeats; a half-drop match adds half a repeat.
- By area: area to paper ÷ roll area. It ignores offcuts, so it gives fewer rolls; both results are shown.
- Presets show their sizes, for example European 0.53 × 10.05 m and US double roll 20.5 in × 33 ft. Paste and lining paper are not calculated. The room list stays in this browser on this device.
Questions and answers
- How many rolls of wallpaper do I need for a 12x14 room?
- With 8 ft walls and 20.5 in × 33 ft double rolls the room needs 31 strips. With 4 in of trim each roll gives 3 strips, so 11 double rolls; with no trim it gives 4, so 8.
- How many square feet does a double roll cover?
- A 20.5 in × 33 ft double roll is about 56 sq ft, but offcuts mean less wall is actually covered.
- What is a half-drop match?
- Each strip starts half a repeat lower than the one next to it, so every strip needs half a repeat more paper.
- Should I subtract doors and windows?
- In the strip method only openings wider than a strip remove a strip. The area method subtracts their full area.
