Webcam Test
Check that your camera works and see its resolution and frame rate. Nothing is recorded or sent
Loading the tool…
Shows a live preview to check that your webcam or laptop camera works, with its actual resolution, measured frame rate and aspect ratio. Use it before a video call or online interview, or after connecting a new webcam.
How to use
- Press "Turn on camera" and allow camera access when the browser asks; the preview appears.
- If you have more than one camera, choose it under "Camera", and try another "Requested resolution". "Mirror the preview" flips the preview left to right.
- Read the "Resolution", "Frame rate (measured)" and "Aspect ratio". Press "Try common resolutions one by one" to get a table of supported resolutions.
- Press "Take and save a photo" to download one PNG picture, and "Turn off camera" when you are done.
How it works
- The frame rate is measured by counting the frames that actually arrive, separately from the camera setting. In low light a camera may use a longer exposure, which lowers the frame rate.
- Some browsers stretch or crop video to fit, so "Supported" may not mean the camera itself captures at that resolution.
- The video is shown on this screen only. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere. A photo is saved the same way round as the preview.
Questions and answers
- Why is my webcam not showing anything?
- Check that the camera is connected and that a laptop camera switch or cover is not closed. If access was denied, allow the camera from the lock (site information) icon in the address bar and turn it on again.
- Why does it say another app is using the camera?
- The camera cannot be turned on while a video call app or another tab is using it. Close that app and try again.
- Does my webcam support 1080p?
- Press "Try common resolutions one by one" and each resolution, including 1920×1080 (Full HD 1080p), is marked "Supported" or "Not supported". When the camera reports it, "Maximum resolution (reported by the camera)" is also shown.
- Why is my webcam preview mirrored?
- The preview is mirrored by default so it looks like a mirror. Turn off "Mirror the preview" to see the image the way the camera captures it.
