Drive Time Calculator
Travel time and arrival time from distance and average speed, or solve for speed or distance
Loading the tool…
Works out how long a drive takes from the distance and average speed, or the speed or distance from the other two values, and gives the arrival time including breaks. It also adds up several legs and shows how little time a higher speed saves.
How to use
- On "Time, speed, distance", choose what to calculate and enter the other two values; the result appears at once.
- On "Arrival time", enter the distance, average speed and departure time, and choose how breaks are counted.
- To plan backwards, choose "When I must arrive: find the departure time" and enter the time you need to be there.
- Use "Several legs" for a trip with different speeds, and "Faster driving" to compare two speeds over the same distance.
How it works
- Time = distance ÷ average speed. The average speed of several legs is total distance ÷ total time, not the mean of the leg speeds.
- With "Every few hours", a break is added after each full interval of driving but not at the destination.
- Roads, traffic, speed limits and stops are not known to the page; there is no map or route search. Inputs are kept in this browser.
Questions and answers
- How long does 300 km take at 100 km/h?
- Three hours of driving. With a 15-minute break every two hours, the whole journey takes 3 hours 15 minutes.
- How do I calculate average speed?
- Divide the distance by the driving time. 150 km in 1 hour 48 minutes (1.8 hours) is an average of 83.3 km/h.
- How much time do I save by driving faster?
- Less than people expect. Over 100 km, going 120 km/h instead of 100 km/h saves 10 minutes: 20% more speed cuts the time by about 17%.
- What is a knot in km/h?
- One knot is one nautical mile per hour, exactly 1.852 km/h.
