Add or remove VAT/sales tax: net price, tax and gross price
Loading the tool…
Works out the net price, the tax and the gross price from any one of them and a tax rate. Use it to add VAT or sales tax to a price, or to take the tax out of a price that already includes it.
How to use
- Under "Amount you know", choose "Net", "Gross (incl. tax)" or "Tax".
- Enter the amount and check the "Tax rate". The starting rate is only an example, so enter the rate that applies to you.
- Under "Rounding", choose "Round", "Round down" or "Round up", and pick a step under "Round to".
- The net price, tax and gross price appear at once, and the copy button copies them.
How it works
- From net: tax = net × rate. From gross: tax = gross × rate ÷ (1 + rate).
- Rounding is applied only to the calculated amount; the third amount is a sum or difference, so net + tax = gross always holds.
- You can change the "Currency". Currencies without decimals round to steps of 1, 10 or 100.
Questions and answers
- How do I remove VAT from a gross price?
- Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, a gross price of 120 is a net price of 100 and tax of 20.
- How do I add VAT to a net price?
- Multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, a net price of 50 becomes 60, of which 10 is tax.
- Should VAT be rounded up, down or to the nearest unit?
- It depends on the rules you work with. Choose "Round", "Round down" or "Round up" and a step under "Round to" to match them.
- How do I get the price from the tax amount only?
- Choose "Tax" under "Amount you know". The net price is tax ÷ rate, so tax of 30 at 10% means a net price of 300 and a gross price of 330.
