White Noise
Play white, pink or brown noise, rain and more for focus or to settle a baby, with a sleep timer
Loading the tool…
Plays background sounds such as white, pink and brown noise, rain, ocean waves, a fan or shushing, and stops them after a set time. Use it to focus on study or work, to fall asleep or to settle a baby.
How to use
- Under "Quick picks", press "Settle a baby (shush + heartbeat)", "Focus (brown noise)" or "Rainy night" to start playing at once.
- For your own mix, press sound cards to turn them on or off and set each one's volume with its slider. Several sounds can play together.
- Choose 15, 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes under "Sleep timer", and set the overall level with "Volume" at the top.
- At night, press "Dark screen" to turn the screen black. Double-tap or press Esc to go back.
How it works
- All sounds are generated in the browser without audio files. White noise has equal power at all frequencies; pink noise drops 3 dB per octave and brown noise 6 dB, so they sound softer.
- Sound fades in over 4 seconds when playback starts. With the sleep timer, it fades out over the last few minutes (up to 2 minutes).
- Whether sound continues in another app or with the screen locked depends on the device and browser. To be sure, leave this page open and use "Dark screen".
Questions and answers
- What is the difference between white, pink and brown noise?
- White noise is an even hiss with strong high tones. Pink noise has weaker high tones, so it sounds softer. Brown noise weakens the high tones even more and sounds like a deep rumble.
- How loud should white noise be for a baby?
- Keep the volume low and place the device well away from the crib. Setting a "Sleep timer" means it does not have to play all night.
- Does it keep playing when the screen is off?
- It depends on the device and browser. If it stops, use "Dark screen" instead: the screen goes black and the sound continues.
