Fuel Cost Calculator

What a trip costs in fuel, from distance, fuel economy and fuel price

Loading the tool…

Works out how much fuel a trip needs and what it costs, from the distance, your car's fuel economy and the fuel price. Add tolls and parking and split the total between several people, for a road trip or a shared ride.

How to use

  1. Choose the "Fuel car" or "Electric car" tab.
  2. Enter the "Distance (one way)" and the "Distance unit". Tick "Round trip (double the distance)" to include the way back.
  3. Enter the "Fuel economy" with its unit, and the "Fuel price" with "Price is per". On the electric tab, enter the "Energy efficiency" and the "Electricity price" per kWh.
  4. Optionally fill in "Split between", "Tolls" and "Parking", then read the "Total trip cost" and the cost per person.

How it works

Questions and answers

How do I calculate the fuel cost of a trip?
Divide the distance by the fuel economy to get the fuel needed, then multiply by the price. For 300 km at 12.5 km/L you need 24 litres; at 2.00 per litre that is 48.00. Miles and gallons work the same way.
Is a round trip twice the fuel cost?
The fuel cost is doubled. With "Round trip (double the distance)" ticked, the distance is doubled, while tolls and parking are added once as entered.
Can it calculate charging costs for an electric car?
Yes. On the "Electric car" tab, enter the efficiency (km/kWh, mi/kWh, Wh/km and others) and the price per kWh. 300 km at 5 km/kWh needs 60 kWh.
What is included in the cost per person?
The total trip cost, meaning fuel or charging plus tolls and parking, divided by the number in "Split between".
