Currency Converter with Your Own Rate
Convert amounts with a rate you type in and print a price cheat sheet for your trip
Loading the tool…
Converts between two currencies with an exchange rate you type in, such as the rate on your exchange receipt or card statement, and works offline. It also makes price cheat sheets you can print at credit card size for your wallet.
How to use
- Choose the "Local currency" and "Your currency", and pick whether the rate is written per 1 or per 100 units.
- Type the "Exchange rate" and, if you pay one, the "Fee" in %.
- Type an amount in either currency; the other box updates at once.
- Check the "Price cheat sheet" in both directions and press "Print wallet cards" to print them at card size.
- Use "New pair" for another trip, and "Compare exchange offers" to see which of two rates and fees costs less.
How it works
- No live rates are used and nothing is downloaded. The page shows the date you note under "Date of the rate" on the printed card.
- The fee is added to what you pay in your own currency: the rate used is the typed rate × (1 + fee ÷ 100).
- Mental arithmetic suggestions such as × 9 or ÷ 10, then × 9 are approximations of the rate; the page shows their error and a worked example.
- Saved pairs stay in this browser on this device. The wallet card is 85.6 × 54 mm, the ID-1 card size of ISO/IEC 7810.
Questions and answers
- How do I convert yen when the rate is given per 100 yen?
- Choose "100 JPY" as the rate notation and type the rate for 100 yen. For example, if 100 JPY = 905 KRW, then 3,000 JPY = 27,150 KRW.
- How do I include a card's foreign transaction fee?
- Enter the fee in %, for example 2.5. The page then shows the actual rate including the fee and how much of each amount is the fee.
- Does the converter update rates automatically?
- No. Rates differ between banks, cards and exchange offices, so you type the rate you were actually given and it stays the same until you change it.
- Which exchange office is cheaper?
- Enter both rates and fees under "Compare exchange offers" with the amount you want to buy. The cost of each offer and the difference are shown.
