Luggage Size Calculator
Convert suitcase sizes between inches and cm, get linear dimensions and volume, and compare with a size limit
Loading the tool…
Converts suitcase sizes between centimetres and inches, adds up the linear dimensions, estimates the volume and compares the bag with a size or weight limit you enter. Use it before buying a suitcase or packing for a flight.
How to use
- Under "Your bag", choose cm or in and enter the "Height", "Width" and "Depth", measured with wheels and handles.
- Read the linear dimensions, the volume in litres and the "Inch" size name on the right.
- Under "Compare with a limit", enter the limit from your airline, or tap an example limit to try it, and see the margin for each side.
- Press "Save this bag" to add bags to the table under "Compare bags".
How it works
- Linear dimensions = height + width + depth. Volume = height × width × depth ÷ 1000 (cm³ to litres), from the outside size, so the space for packing is smaller.
- When the limit is given per side, the sides are compared from longest to shortest, so the bag may be turned any way.
- The example limits are examples only; limits differ by airline, fare and class. One inch is exactly 2.54 cm and one pound exactly 0.45359237 kg.
- Saved bags stay in this browser on this device.
Questions and answers
- What are linear dimensions of a suitcase?
- The sum of its height, width and depth. A 55 × 40 × 20 cm bag has linear dimensions of 115 cm, about 45.3 in.
- How tall is a 24-inch suitcase in cm?
- 24 inches is 60.96 cm. The name usually refers to the height, but makers differ on whether the wheels are included, so check the real measurements.
- How many litres is a 55 × 40 × 20 cm bag?
- The outside box is 44 litres. The space inside is smaller because of the frame, wheels and handle.
- Do wheels and handles count in the size?
- Airlines usually measure the outside size including wheels, handles and pockets. Measure between the points that stick out most.
