Voice Typing (Speech to Text)
Speak and get text, using your browser's speech recognition
Loading the tool…
Turns what you say into a microphone into text, using your browser's speech recognition. Use it to take meeting notes or draft a long text by speaking instead of typing.
How to use
- Choose the language under "Spoken language". The page language is selected at first.
- Press "Start voice typing" and allow microphone access when the browser asks.
- Speak; the text builds up in "Transcribed text". Faded text is a guess that is not final yet.
- Correct mistakes directly in the box, and press "Pause" to stop for a while.
- When you are done, press "Copy" or "Save as .txt".
How it works
- Chrome and most other browsers send your voice to the browser company's servers to recognise it. This site does not store or send your voice or text, but do not say anything sensitive.
- It works in Chrome, Edge and Safari; Firefox does not support speech recognition. An internet connection may be needed.
- With "Use spoken punctuation" on, say words such as "period", "comma", "new line" or "new paragraph" on their own to insert punctuation and line breaks.
- The text is not saved, so copy it or save it as .txt before you close the page. Only the language and punctuation settings are remembered.
Questions and answers
- Does voice typing stop when I pause?
- No. When the browser ends recognition, listening starts again automatically. If it keeps ending at once several times in a row, it stops and asks you to check the microphone.
- Which languages can it transcribe?
- You can choose from 30 languages, including English, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. If the browser does not support the chosen language, the page says so.
- Why does it say the microphone is unavailable?
- In the site settings next to the address bar, check that this site may use the microphone and that no other program is using it, then start again.
- Can I upload an audio file to transcribe?
- No. It only transcribes what you say into the microphone in real time; it does not open audio files.
