How many pages a word count makes, and the other way round, by font and spacing
Loading the tool…
Estimates how many pages a word count fills on A4 or Letter paper, or how many words fit on a given number of pages, for the font, size and line spacing you choose. Use it to check an essay or manuscript against a page or word limit.
How to use
- Under "Convert", choose "Words → pages" or "Pages → words".
- Choose "Count by": "Words" for English and similar languages, or "Characters (Korean, Japanese, Chinese)".
- Enter the number of words or pages, or open "Count from your text" and paste your text to count it automatically.
- Set "Font", "Font size", "Line spacing", "Paper" and "Margins (all sides)" to match your document; "Pages, about" updates.
How it works
- Words per page = (lines per page, from text height ÷ line height) × words that fill one line, adjusted once for paragraph ends and uneven line ends.
- The adjustment uses the common rule of thumb: Times New Roman 12 pt on Letter paper with 1-inch margins holds about 275 words double-spaced and 550 single-spaced.
- If the chosen font is installed on your device, its letter widths are measured; otherwise built-in average widths are used. The built-in values for Korean, Japanese and Chinese fonts are estimates.
- It assumes plain paragraphs with no headings, images or extra space between paragraphs, and Word-style line spacing. A real document can differ by 10–20%.
Questions and answers
- How many pages is 1,000 words?
- In Times New Roman 12 pt on Letter paper with 1-inch margins, about 3.6 pages double-spaced and about 1.8 pages single-spaced. Other fonts and paper sizes give different results.
- How many words are on one page double spaced?
- About 275 words in Times New Roman 12 pt on Letter paper with 1-inch margins. Wider fonts such as Arial fit fewer words per page.
- Is double spacing twice as many pages as single spacing?
- Almost. Double spacing fits about half as many lines on a page, so the same text takes about twice as many pages.
- Will my document have exactly this many pages?
- Not necessarily. Headings, images, paragraph spacing and the program you use all change the page count, so treat the result as an estimate.
