Text to Speech
Have your device read text aloud
Loading the tool…
Reads the text you enter aloud with the voices that come with your device and browser. Use it to listen to a long text instead of reading it, or to hear how a sentence in another language is pronounced.
How to use
- Type or paste text into "Text to read aloud".
- Choose a voice under "Voice" and set "Speed", "Pitch" and "Volume".
- Press "Play" to start, and use "Pause" and "Stop" to halt. On the keyboard, Space plays or pauses and Esc stops.
- Under "Reading", click any sentence to start reading from it.
How it works
- The page uses the browser's speech synthesis feature (Web Speech API), so the list of voices and the sound differ between devices and browsers.
- Long text is split into sentences that are read one after another, so reading does not stop halfway. The current sentence is highlighted, and the current word too when the browser supports it.
- Voices marked "On this device" work offline. With an "Online voice", the browser may send the text to its speech service.
- Speed goes from 0.5× to 2× and pitch from 0 to 2. Your text and settings are saved in this browser on this device.
Questions and answers
- Can I save the speech as an MP3 file?
- No. Browsers play these voices but do not give websites access to the sound, so it cannot be saved as an audio file.
- Why is there no voice for my language?
- The voices come from your device. Install a voice for your language in the device's speech settings, then reload the page; it appears under "This language".
- Can I hear text in another language?
- Yes. Choose a voice for that language under "Other languages". If the voice and the text are in different languages, the pronunciation may sound wrong.
- Which browsers does it work in?
- It works in recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox. In a browser without speech output, the page shows a message and the buttons are disabled.
