Word Frequency Counter
Find the words and phrases you use most in a text
Loading the tool…
Counts the words in a text and lists them from most to least frequent, and also finds 2-word and 3-word phrases that appear more than once. Use it to spot words you repeat too often, or to check how often a keyword appears (keyword density).
How to use
- Paste your text into "Your text". The word counts and the list appear at once.
- In the options, set "Leave out common words", "Leave out numbers" and "Shortest word to count", and list other words to skip under "Your own words to leave out".
- Switch between the "Words", "2-word phrases" and "3-word phrases" tabs, and use "Search the list" to find a word.
- Click a word in the list or the bar chart to highlight it in the text. Use "Copy" or "Save as CSV" to export the list.
How it works
- Share = count of the word ÷ all words in the text × 100. Words you leave out still count in the total.
- Words are split by the browser according to the page language. There is no morphological analysis, so different forms of a word count separately.
- Phrases are listed only when they appear at least twice, and a phrase never runs across punctuation or a line break.
- The text you paste is saved only in this browser on this device.
Questions and answers
- How do I find the most used words in a text?
- Paste the text; the "Words" tab lists words by count, highest first. The top 15 are also shown as a bar chart.
- How is keyword density calculated?
- It is the number of times the keyword appears divided by the total number of words. A word that appears 15 times in a 1,000-word text has a density of 1.5%. The "Share" column shows this value.
- Why are very common words missing from the list?
- "Leave out common words" is on by default and removes a built-in list of very common words such as articles and prepositions. Switch it off to count every word.
- Can I see how often I repeat a phrase?
- Yes. The "2-word phrases" and "3-word phrases" tabs list every phrase that appears at least twice, with its count.
