Markdown Preview
Write Markdown and see the result side by side; export as HTML
Loading the tool…
Shows formatted output next to the Markdown you write, and saves it as HTML or as a .md file. Use it to check how a GitHub README, a blog post or notes will look before you publish them.
How to use
- Write in the "Markdown" box, or press "Open file" to open a .md file. On a phone, switch between "Write" and "Preview".
- Use the formatting buttons such as "Bold", "Heading", "List", "Checklist", "Link" and "Table" to insert the marks. Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I and Ctrl+K also work.
- Check the result in the "Preview" on the right.
- Export with "Save .md", "Save .html", "Copy HTML" or "Print".
How it works
- It follows GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), so tables, checklists, strikethrough and code blocks work.
- HTML inside your Markdown is cleaned before it is shown: scripts, event handlers and javascript: links are removed, and links open in a new tab.
- Images from other sites are not loaded by default. Turn on "Load images from the web" to show them. "Save .html" and "Copy HTML" keep the image addresses.
- Your text is saved automatically in this browser only.
Questions and answers
- Why does a single line break not show in Markdown?
- Markdown treats one press of Enter as a space. Leave an empty line to start a new paragraph, or end a line with two spaces to break the line inside a paragraph.
- How do I make a table in Markdown?
- Separate the cells with vertical bars, such as "| Item | Hours |", and put "| --- | --- |" on the next line. The "Table" button inserts a two-column table to start from.
- Can I save Markdown as a PDF?
- Press "Print" and choose to save as PDF in the print dialog; the preview is saved as a PDF.
- Will it look exactly like a README on GitHub?
- GFM syntax such as tables, checklists and code blocks is handled the same way. Fonts and colours can differ from GitHub, and code is not colour-highlighted.
