GIF Maker
Make an animated GIF from a set of photos or a short video
Loading the tool…
Makes an animated GIF from several photos shown one after another, or from a part of a video. Use it to add a short moving picture to a chat, a forum post or a document.
How to use
- Add two or more photos on "From images", or add a video on "From a video".
- For images, set the order with the ← and → buttons and set the "Time per frame" in ms. For a video, mark the part with "Start here" and "End here" and choose the "Frames per second" (5 to 15).
- Set "Width", "Colours" and "When the shape differs", and check the "Estimated file size".
- Press "Make GIF", look at the preview and save it with "Download GIF".
How it works
- A GIF frame can use at most 256 colors. Fewer colors, a smaller width or a shorter clip make the file smaller.
- GIF stores the time of each frame in hundredths of a second, and browsers slow down very short times. For this reason the time per frame starts at 20 ms.
- A GIF can hold up to 300 frames. GIF has no sound, so the audio of a video is left out.
- Photos and videos are not uploaded; they are processed on this device.
Questions and answers
- How do I turn a video into a GIF?
- Add the video on "From a video", play it and press "Start here" and "End here" to mark the part, then press "Make GIF". MP4 (H.264) and WebM files usually work.
- How can I make a GIF smaller?
- Reduce the "Width", lower "Colours" to 128 or 64, and use a shorter clip or fewer "Frames per second". The "Estimated file size" updates after each change.
- Can each photo stay on screen for a different time?
- Yes. "Time per frame" sets every frame at once, and each frame in the list can then have its own time.
- Can I make a GIF that plays only once?
- Yes. Turn off "Repeat forever" and the GIF stops on its last frame.
