Pixel Art Maker
Draw pixel art on a grid and export it scaled up
Loading the tool…
Draws pixel art cell by cell on a small grid and saves it as a PNG scaled up without blurring. Use it to make game characters, icons or profile pictures in a pixel style.
How to use
- Under "Canvas size", choose a size such as 16 × 16 or 32 × 32 and press "Change size".
- Pick a tool such as "Pen", "Fill", "Line", "Rectangle" or "Circle" and a color, and draw. On a phone, draw with one finger and zoom or pan with two.
- Refine the drawing with "Mirror left-right", "Layers" and "Flip, rotate and shift", and remove mistakes with "Undo".
- Set the "Scale" and "Transparent background", then press "Save PNG". To continue later, press "Save work file".
How it works
- The scale goes from ×1 to ×32, and each cell becomes a square of one color, so edges stay sharp. A 32-cell drawing at ×16 is 512 × 512 px.
- The canvas can be up to 256 cells on each side, with up to 4 layers and 50 undo steps.
- "Turn a photo into pixel art" shrinks a photo to the canvas size, reduces its colors and puts it on the current layer.
- The drawing is saved automatically in this browser. To move it to another device, save a work file (JSON) and open it there with "Open work file".
Questions and answers
- Does pixel art get blurry when saved larger?
- No. Each cell is enlarged into a square the size of the "Scale", so the pixel shapes stay exactly as drawn.
- What canvas size should I start with?
- Small icons often start at 16 × 16 and characters at 32 × 32. With fewer cells, each cell matters more.
- Can I turn a photo into pixel art?
- Yes. Under "Turn a photo into pixel art", set the "Number of colors" and press "Choose a photo"; it is fitted to the canvas size. "Use only the current palette" limits it to your palette colors.
- Can I save a PNG with a transparent background?
- Yes. "Transparent background" is on by default, so empty cells are saved as transparent. Turn it off to fill them with a background color.
