Sentence of the day
One sentence a day in the language you are learning: listen, repeat, rebuild it from its words, then type it
Loading the tool…
Shows one sentence a day in the language you are learning, lets you hear it and check the meaning, then practise it by rebuilding it from its words and typing it from memory. Any of the site's twelve languages can be learned, with Spanish offered in both its Spain and Latin American forms.
How to use
- Choose the "Language I am learning" and "Language I know". The same choice is shared with the other language tools.
- Press "Listen" or "Listen slowly" for the pronunciation, and "Show meaning" for the translation and a short note.
- In "Put the words in order", tap the shuffled words in order; in "Type it", type the sentence from memory and press "Check".
- Press "Learned it" once you know the sentence. Earlier days are available through the left arrow or the date picker.
- If a sentence or translation looks wrong, press "Looks wrong" to send a correction request.
How it works
- Everyone sees the same sentence on the same calendar day. When the list has gone round once, it is reshuffled.
- The typing check ignores capitalization, punctuation and spacing and compares the letters that remain.
- Latin American Spanish is written separately only where it differs from Spanish from Spain; otherwise the two share one sentence.
- Learned sentences and streaks are saved only in this browser on this device.
Questions and answers
- Why is there no sound?
- The tool uses the browser's speech synthesis. If no voice for that language is installed on the device, nothing is read, or it is read with another accent. Adding the language in the device's text-to-speech settings fixes this.
- Can I see more than one sentence a day?
- Yes. The left arrow opens any earlier day. Future days are not available.
- What is the difference between the two Spanish options?
- Typical differences are ustedes instead of vosotros, jugo versus zumo, carro versus coche. Where a sentence differs, each option shows its own wording.
- A sentence looks wrong. What can I do?
- Use the "Looks wrong" button on the sentence card to send a corrected version or a note. Requests are public and can be seen in the "Correction requests" tool.
