Coin Flip
Flip a coin for heads or tails
Loading the tool…
Flips one coin, or many coins at once, and shows heads or tails at random. Use it to decide who goes first, to pick a side or to choose between two options.
How to use
- Tap the coin or the "Flip the coin" button; the coin spins and the result appears in large text. The space bar also flips it.
- Under "Running tally", see how often each side has come up, the share of each, the "Current streak" and the longest streaks.
- To flip many at once, enter the "Number of coins (1–100)" and press "Flip them all". The results are also shown in the order flipped.
- Open "Rename heads and tails" to give the two sides other names, such as yes and no.
How it works
- Results come from the browser's cryptographic random number generator, and each side has a chance of 1/2. The result is decided before the coin starts to spin.
- Batch flips are added to the running tally as well. The tally and the side names are saved only in this browser on this device, and "Reset tally" clears the tally.
Questions and answers
- Is a coin flip really 50/50?
- Yes. Every flip gives heads or tails with a chance of 1/2 each. The weight of a coin or the way it is thrown plays no part here.
- After several heads in a row, is tails more likely?
- No. Each flip does not depend on earlier flips, so after five heads in a row the chance of heads on the next flip is still 1/2.
- If I flip 100 coins, do I get exactly 50 heads?
- Usually the count is close to 50, but exactly 50 is not common. The more coins you flip, the closer the share of heads comes to 50%.
