Random Team Generator
Split a list of names into random teams by team count or team size
Loading the tool…
Splits a list of names into random teams, either into a set number of teams or into teams of a set size. Use it to pick sides for a game, form project groups or divide a class.
How to use
- Type the names in "Names (one per line)". To spread gender or skill evenly, add tags after a comma, as in "Olivia, F, 3".
- Under "Split by", choose "Number of teams" or "People per team" and enter the number. When splitting by team size, also choose what to do with "People left over".
- If needed, open "Team names · keep together / keep apart" to name the teams and list people who must stay together or apart.
- Press "Make teams" to see a card for each team. Press "Shuffle again" for a new split, and use "Copy as text" or "Save as image" to share the result.
How it works
- Without tags or rules, the list is shuffled and dealt out, so every possible split has the same chance. Randomness comes from the browser's cryptographic random number generator.
- Text after a comma is read as a group (such as F or M) and a number as a skill score. Teams then get a similar mix of groups and similar score totals, shown on each card.
- If a rule cannot be met, a warning names the people affected. "Pick a random captain for each team" marks one captain per team.
Questions and answers
- How are 25 people split into 4 teams?
- With "Number of teams", team sizes differ by at most one, so you get 7, 6, 6 and 6. Which team gets the extra person is also random.
- Can I balance teams by gender?
- Yes. Add a group after each name, as in "Emma, F", and each group is spread evenly across the teams. Add a number as well to balance the total skill score.
- Can I keep two people on different teams?
- Yes. Under "Keep apart", write them on one line, separated by commas, such as "Emma, Noah". People who must be together go under "Keep together".
