Liar Game (Odd One Out) Word Dealer

Runs the liar game, also called odd one out, on one phone passed around the group. It deals a secret word to each player in turn, then runs the discussion timer, the vote and the reveal.

How to use

1. Set "Players", "Liars", "Topic", "Mode" and "Discussion time". Names in "Player names (optional)" are used instead of numbers.
2. Press "Start game" and hand the phone to the player shown. They press "Tap to see your word", then "Hide and pass to the next player".
3. When everyone has looked, the discussion timer starts. The player who speaks first is chosen at random.
4. Under "Go to vote", tap the player the group picked, press "Reveal result" to see the liar and the word, then start the "Next round".

How it works

• In "Classic" mode the liar sees only the topic. In "Spy" mode the liar sees a similar but different word. In "Fool" mode the liar gets a different word and does not know they are the liar.
• Games have 3 to 20 players and up to 3 liars, always fewer than half the group. Each of the 9 topics has more than 40 words.
• Words and liars are chosen with the browser's cryptographic random number generator, and recent words do not come back right away. A word on screen is hidden if the screen turns off or you switch apps.
• During a game the screen stays on in browsers that support it. Your own words and settings are saved only on this device.

Questions and answers

What are the rules of the liar game?

Everyone except the liar gets the same word. Players describe it in one sentence each, then the group names the liar. In classic mode a caught liar still wins by guessing the word.

Can I add my own words?

Yes. Under "Add your own words", put similar words on one line, separated by commas. In spy mode the liar gets another word from the same line.

How many liars should there be?

Fewer than half the players: up to 2 with 5 players, and up to 3 with 7 or more. The page shows the maximum.
