Baby Cost Calculator
Add up what a baby's first year will cost, item by item
Loading the tool…
Adds up the cost of a baby's first year from your own amounts for items such as hospital bills, a stroller and car seat, formula, diapers and childcare. Benefits you receive are subtracted to show the net cost and a monthly average.
How to use
- Check the "Period" (12 months by default) and the "Currency".
- Enter an "Amount" for each item and mark it "One-time" or "Monthly". A monthly item can have its own "Number of months"; left empty, it uses the whole period.
- Delete items you do not need and use "Add item" for new ones. Item names can be changed.
- Enter money you will receive under "Benefits and allowances (subtracted)". Press "Save as CSV" to download the list.
How it works
- The tool has no built-in prices. Costs differ widely by place and by what you choose, so enter amounts from quotes, price tags or your budget.
- Total = one-time costs + monthly amounts × months − benefits. The monthly average is the total ÷ the period. Bars show the "Share by category" and "One-time vs recurring".
- Your amounts are saved only in this browser.
Questions and answers
- How much does a baby cost in the first year?
- It depends a great deal on where you live, how you feed the baby and what childcare you use, so the tool shows no average. Enter real quotes and prices to get the total for your situation.
- How do I work out the yearly cost of diapers?
- Set "Diapers" to "Monthly" and enter one month's amount; it is multiplied by the months. 50 per month for 12 months is 600.
- Can I include child benefits or grants?
- Yes. Enter them under "Benefits and allowances (subtracted)" as monthly or one-time amounts. Check with the agency that pays them for the amounts that apply to you.
- Can I calculate a period other than the first year?
- Yes. Set the "Period" anywhere from 1 to 60 months to see the total and monthly average for that time.
