Contraction Timer
Tap to record how long each contraction lasts and how far apart they are
Loading the tool…
Press one big button when a contraction starts and again when it ends to record how long each one lasts and how far apart they are, with averages for the last hour and the last six. The log can be shown or sent to your care team.
How to use
- When a contraction starts, press "Contraction started"; when it ends, press the same button ("Contraction ended"). The button is large enough for one hand, and the Space key works too.
- Read the average length and interval under "Last hour" and "Last 6", and the pattern in the "Last 60 minutes" bars.
- Fix a mistaken tap with "Edit" in the "Records" table: change the times, delete it or add a note.
- Send the log with "Copy records as text" or "Share", use the "Night screen" in the dark, and press "Clear all records" when you are done.
How it works
- Length runs from the start to the end of a contraction; the interval runs from the start of the previous contraction to the start of this one.
- Times come from the device clock, so a locked screen, another app or midnight does not change the results. "Keep the screen on" works only where the browser supports it.
- This tool only records times. Follow your care team's instructions on when to contact the hospital.
- Records stay in this browser and survive a reload; with saving off they are gone when the page is closed.
Questions and answers
- How do you time contractions?
- Measure from the start of one contraction to the start of the next. If one starts at 2:00 and the next at 2:05, they are 5 minutes apart.
- How is the length of a contraction measured?
- From the moment it starts to the moment it ends. Press the button at both moments and the "Length" column shows minutes and seconds.
- Does it keep counting if my phone screen turns off?
- Yes. It stores the times you pressed the button and works out the difference, so the time that passed is shown correctly when you come back.
- When should I go to the hospital?
- The tool sets no rule for that. Follow the guidance your care team gave you, and copy the log as text to show them if needed.
