Name Picker Tournament
Enter candidate names and choose between pairs until one favourite is left
Loading the tool…
Shows candidate names two at a time and asks you to pick the one you prefer, until a favourite name and a full ranking are left. Use it to narrow down baby names, or to choose a name for a pet or a project.
How to use
- Type the names into "Candidate names (one per line)". Add a "Surname (optional)" to see each name with it.
- Under "Method", choose "Knockout", "Every pair once" or "Quick score (Elo)", then press "Start choosing".
- Click one of the two names or use the ← and → keys. Backspace undoes the last choice.
- Read the ranking, then share it with "Copy results" or "Copy link to my ranking".
How it works
- You can enter 2 to 64 names, and repeated names are kept only once. The knockout draws pairs at random and takes one comparison fewer than the number of names.
- "Every pair once" compares every pair and ranks names by wins. "Quick score (Elo)" moves points between the two names after each choice and needs fewer comparisons.
- Progress is saved in this browser. The tool does not suggest names or explain their meanings.
Questions and answers
- How does a name bracket work?
- With "Knockout", names are paired at random and the one you pick goes on to the next round. The last name left is the winner.
- How many choices does it take with 16 names?
- A knockout takes 15 and "Every pair once" takes 120. The number of comparisons is shown before you start.
- Can my partner and I compare our choices?
- Send the link from "Copy link to my ranking". After your partner ranks the same names, the page shows the names you both placed in your top 5.
