Photo to Coloring Page Converter
Turn a photo or drawing into a printable coloring page with clean outlines, then print it or save it as a PDF
Loading the tool…
Makes a coloring page from a photo or a child's drawing: the picture becomes black outlines on a white background, sized for A4 or Letter. It suits the moment a child asks to color in their own toy, pet or drawing and there is no printed sheet for it. The picture is processed in the browser and is not uploaded.
How to use
- Drop a photo or drawing on the box at the top, or click it to choose a file. On a phone, "Take a photo" opens the camera. The page opens with an example owl so you can see the result first.
- Compare the original and the coloring page "Side by side" or with the "Slider".
- Adjust the lines: lower "Detail" for younger children, raise "Remove specks" if small dots remain, and turn up "Keep light areas clean" for faces.
- Under "Page", choose the paper, "Orientation" and "Pictures per sheet"; "Two (fold in half)" puts two copies on one sheet.
- Press "Save as PDF", "Print" or "Save as PNG".
How it works
- The picture is resized so its long side is between 1,100 and 1,600 pixels, turned to grey (with two colour-difference channels so that red next to green still gives a line), blurred, and searched for edges.
- "Clean outlines" uses the Canny method and then joins the two edges of thin strokes into one line and closes small gaps. "Sketch lines" uses a difference of two blurs and follows dark areas.
- Short lines and dots below the "Remove specks" length are removed, and the remaining lines are drawn with even, rounded thickness.
- Only the line settings are saved in this browser; the picture itself is not stored.
How to turn a photo into a coloring page that is easy to color
The tool draws a line wherever brightness or colour changes sharply. A picture with one main subject, even light and a plain background gives the cleanest page, because every change of colour in the background also becomes a line. Crop the photo close to the subject before adding it if you can.
For a toddler, lower "Detail" to 2 or 3 and choose line thickness 3 or 4: the page then has a few large, closed shapes. For an older child, raise "Detail" so that smaller parts such as buttons or patterns appear.
Coloring page from a face photo: fewer lines on the skin
Soft shadows on cheeks and around the nose are weak changes of brightness inside a light area. "Keep light areas clean" asks for stronger contrast before it draws a line there, so the outline of the face, the eyes and the mouth stay while shading disappears. Start around 5 and move it up or down while watching the preview.
Hair can turn into many fine lines. If that happens, lower "Detail" one or two steps or raise "Remove specks".
Questions and answers
- Can I make a coloring page from my child's drawing?
- Yes. Photograph or scan the drawing in even light and add it. Crayon strokes become single outlines, so the child can color their own drawing again.
- Why are some outlines open or broken?
- Where the subject and the background have almost the same brightness and colour, there is no edge to find. Raise "Detail", or use a photo with a background that contrasts with the subject.
- How do I print a coloring page on A4?
- Choose A4 under "Paper", then press "Print" or "Save as PDF". With "Match the picture" the page turns to landscape for a wide picture.
- Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
- No. All processing happens in this browser, and the photo is not saved when you leave the page.
