School Year Calculator

Works out when a child starts and finishes each school stage and the grade on any date. Useful for resume education dates or for seeing several children's grades year by year.

How to use

1. Pick the "Date of birth". The "Grade on that date" and a table of start and finish dates appear at once.
2. Choose the "Entry rule". With "Set my own cutoff", open "Cutoff date and school stages" to set the cutoff date, age, start month and years per stage.
3. If the child started early or later, change "Start of school".
4. For a resume, enter gap years and years of leave under "University and resume adjustments".
5. On the "Several children" tab, enter one name and date of birth per line to see each child's grade by school year.

How it works

• With your own cutoff, a child who has reached the chosen age by the cutoff date starts first grade in the school year that begins that year. The filled-in values are only an example.
• The Korean rule follows article 13 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act; the Japanese rule follows article 17 of the School Education Act.
• Grades assume one grade per year with no repeated years.
• Names entered on the "Several children" tab stay in this browser on this device.

Questions and answers

What grade should my child be in?

Set the cutoff date and age your school uses. With "6 by September 1", a child born on September 1, 2019 starts first grade in September 2025; one born on September 2 starts in 2026.

What is my child's high school class year?

See "Graduates from high school". Twelve school years starting in September 2025 end in August 2037, the class of 2037.

How do gap years change the graduation year?

Each gap year and each year of leave moves the university finish date one year later.

Can I see several children at once?

Yes. On the "Several children" tab, enter lines such as "Child A, 2016-08-21". All children use the entry rule set on the first tab.
