Work Experience Calculator
Add up several jobs into total years, months and days of experience, without double-counting overlaps
Loading the tool…
Enter the start and end dates of each job, and the tool adds them into total experience in years, months and days, total months and total days, counting overlapping days only once. Use it to fill in the experience section of a CV or an application form.
How to use
- On each row, enter the "Employer" (optional), the "Start date" and the "End date". For your current job, tick "Still working here".
- Press "Add a job" for more rows, or put your jobs into "Paste several lines" and press "Read and replace".
- Under "Method", choose how "Months" are counted, whether to "Count the end date", and a "Reference date" if needed.
- Read "Total experience" and the "Result per job" table, and press "Copy result" to use it elsewhere.
How it works
- "Calendar months" uses real month lengths. With two or more separate periods, the leftover days are added up and every 30 days become 1 month.
- "30 days = 1 month" divides the total days by 30: the whole number is months, the remainder is days, and 12 months make a year.
- Jobs that overlap or follow each other directly are joined into one period, and the overlap is listed with its dates and days.
- The result is a calculation, not a certificate of employment. Entries are saved only in this browser on this device.
Questions and answers
- Should the last day of work be counted?
- Usually yes. With "Count the end date" on, a job from 2 March 2020 to 1 March 2023 is exactly 3 years.
- How are two jobs at the same time counted?
- Overlapping days are counted once. The page shows which two rows overlap, from when to when, and for how many days.
- What is the difference between calendar months and 30-day months?
- The 3-year example above (1,095 days) is 3 years 0 months 0 days in calendar months and 3 years 0 months 15 days in 30-day months. Use the method the organization asks for.
- Can I see my experience in decimal years?
- "In years" shows total months ÷ 12, with leftover days converted at 30 days = 1 month.
