Mixed Drink ABV Calculator
The alcohol strength of a mixed drink, and how much mixer or water gives the strength you want
Loading the tool…
Works out the alcohol strength of a drink mixed from several ingredients, the water or mixer that brings a drink to the strength you want, and a rough strength for a fruit infusion. Use it when making cocktails, highballs or homemade infused liquor.
How to use
- On "Mix", choose the unit (mL, fl oz or glasses) and enter each ingredient's amount and ABV; press "Add an ingredient" for more rows.
- Optionally enter "Water from melted ice"; the ABV of the mix, the total volume and the pure alcohol appear at once.
- Press an example button to load a recipe, then change the amounts and strengths to match your bottles.
- On "Dilute to a strength", enter the drink, its ABV and the ABV you want to get the water or mixer to add.
- On "Fruit infusion", enter the liquor, its ABV, the fruit weight and its water share for an expected ABV.
How it works
- ABV = sum of (amount × ABV) ÷ total amount. Pure alcohol in grams = alcohol volume × 0.789 g/ml.
- Alcohol and water shrink slightly when mixed. This is ignored, so all results are approximations.
- The page does not estimate blood alcohol, whether you may drive, or health limits.
Questions and answers
- What is the ABV of a gin and tonic?
- With 50 ml of 40 % gin and 150 ml of tonic, it is 20 ml of alcohol in 200 ml, or 10 %. Ice that melts lowers it further.
- How do I calculate the ABV of a mixed drink?
- Multiply each amount by its ABV, add the results and divide by the total amount. 60 ml at 16.5 % plus 140 ml at 4.5 % gives 16.2 ml in 200 ml, about 8.1 %.
- How much water to dilute 40% alcohol to 25%?
- Water = amount × (40 ÷ 25 − 1). For 100 ml that is 60 ml of water.
- How much alcohol is in a drink in grams?
- Multiply the alcohol volume by 0.789. A drink with 20 ml of alcohol contains about 15.8 g.
