Fraction Calculator
Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions, with the steps shown
Loading the tool…
Adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides two fractions and gives the answer in simplest form, as a mixed number and as a decimal, with the common denominator and simplifying steps written out. Other tabs simplify fractions, convert decimals and fractions, compare fractions and find the GCD and LCM.
How to use
- On the "Operations" tab, enter the "Numerator" and "Denominator" of the "First fraction" and the "Second fraction". Put the whole part of a mixed number in "Whole number", and use "Change sign" for a negative fraction.
- Choose +, −, × or ÷ under "Operation"; "Simplest form", "Mixed number", "Decimal" and "Steps" appear at once.
- To reduce a fraction, open "Simplify". To turn a decimal into a fraction, open "Decimal ↔ fraction".
- Use "Compare" to see which of two fractions is larger, and "GCD and LCM" for a list of whole numbers.
How it works
- For addition and subtraction, both fractions are rewritten over the least common denominator; for division, the first fraction is multiplied by the reciprocal of the second. The result is divided by the greatest common divisor of its numerator and denominator.
- All calculations use exact whole numbers without rounding, so large numbers give no rounding errors.
- Repeating decimals can be written with brackets, such as 0.(3) or 0.1(6), or with dots, such as 0.333…
- Your inputs and the chosen tab are saved in this browser on this device.
Questions and answers
- How do I add fractions with different denominators?
- Rewrite them over the least common denominator, then add the numerators. 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
- How do you divide fractions?
- Multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction. 2/3 ÷ 4/5 = 2/3 × 5/4 = 10/12, which simplifies to 5/6.
- How do I convert a repeating decimal to a fraction?
- Enter it on the "Decimal ↔ fraction" tab, for example 0.1(6). 0.1666… = (16 − 1) ÷ 90 = 15/90 = 1/6.
- How do I turn a mixed number into an improper fraction?
- Multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator. 1 2/3 = (1 × 3 + 2)/3 = 5/3.
