Add Page Numbers to PDF
Stamp page numbers on a PDF in the position and format you choose
Loading the tool…
Adds page numbers such as 1, 1 / 10 or - 1 - to the pages of a PDF in the position and font you choose. Use it when a report, application or document for binding needs page numbers.
How to use
- Drop the PDF file onto the page or click to choose it.
- Choose the "Number format" and "Numerals", and change the "First number" if needed. To write your own format, choose "Custom…".
- Choose one of the nine places under "Position" and set the "Distance from the edge", "Font size", "Font" and "Color".
- Under "Number these pages", choose "All pages", "Skip the cover" or "Choose pages", and check the preview.
- Press "Add numbers and save PDF".
How it works
- In a custom format, {n} becomes the page number and {total} the last number printed. Roman numerals work from 1 to 3999.
- Numbers in Latin letters and digits are added as text in a standard PDF font (Helvetica, Times or Courier). Characters these fonts lack, such as Korean, are drawn as an image.
- Pages of mixed sizes and rotated pages are numbered as they appear on screen. The file stays on this device, and PDFs locked with a password or against changes cannot be opened.
Questions and answers
- Can I skip the cover page and start numbering at 1 on page 2?
- Yes. Choose "Skip the cover" under "Number these pages"; with "First number" set to 1, the second page gets the number 1.
- How do I put page numbers on the outer edge for double-sided printing?
- Turn on "Alternate sides for double-sided printing" and choose a right-hand position. Odd pages get the number on the right and even pages on the left.
- Can I show the total, as in "Page 1 of 10"?
- Yes. Choose "1 / 10" or "Page 1 of 10" under "Number format". When only some pages are numbered, the total is the last number printed.
- Can I number only certain pages?
- Choose "Choose pages" and type a range such as 2-10 in "Page range". "3-" means from page 3 to the end.
