Fill-in-the-Blank Study Tool
Paste your notes, hide the key words and test yourself
Loading the tool…
Paste a passage from your notes or textbook, hide the key words, and fill in the blanks to learn it. Use it to make a cloze test for yourself before an exam.
How to use
- On the "Make blanks" tab, paste the passage into "Text to learn".
- Under "Words to hide", choose "Pick by hand", "Random share", "Every nth word", "Numbers only" or "Words in [[brackets]]". You can also tap words in the text below to hide or show them.
- On the "Study" tab, use "Tap to reveal" to open answers one by one, or "Type and check" to type the answers and press "Check".
- Press "Retry the wrong ones" to try the missed blanks again, or "Print worksheet" to practise on paper.
How it works
- Wrap key words in [[double brackets]] to hide exactly those words. The text is split into words with the browser's language-aware word segmentation.
- Checking ignores capital letters, spaces and punctuation at the start or end of an answer. As a hint, the blank can show the "First letter" or the "Length".
- The printed worksheet numbers each blank and lists the answers separately below the text.
- Several materials are saved in this browser on this device. On the "Backup" tab you can export and import them as a JSON file.
Questions and answers
- How do I make a fill-in-the-blank test automatically?
- "Random share" hides a chosen share of the words at random (30% by default), and "Every nth word" hides words at a fixed interval, such as every 5th word. "Reshuffle" hides different words.
- Can I hide only dates and numbers?
- Yes. "Numbers only" hides every word that contains a digit, such as 1446 or 3.14. This helps when you learn dates or quantities.
- Can I hide whole phrases instead of single words?
- Yes. Text inside double brackets, such as [[carbon dioxide]], becomes one blank. Choose "Words in [[brackets]]" to hide only those.
- Can I print a worksheet with an answer key?
- Press "Print worksheet". The sheet has a name and date line, numbered blanks and the answer key.
