English Vocabulary Quiz
Practise English words by level: pick the meaning, spell it, or listen and type
Loading the tool…
A quiz for practising English vocabulary at basic, intermediate and advanced levels: pick the meaning or the word, spell it, listen and type it, or flip through word cards. Missed words can be practised again.
How to use
- Choose a practice mode under "How to practise", for example "Spell the word" or "Listen and type".
- Set the "Level", the "Part of speech" and the "Words per round" (10 to 50).
- Answer each question; the right answer appears at once, and at the end "Results" shows your score and the words you missed.
- On the results screen, press the button to practise the missed words again, or set "Which words" to "Missed words only".
How it works
- The list has 1,356 common English words written for this tool (425 basic, 520 intermediate, 411 advanced). The levels are an editorial choice, not an exam or CEFR level.
- Each word has a part of speech, a plain-English definition and an example sentence. "Listen and type" uses the browser's English voice (American or British) and is hidden when no voice is available.
- A right answer moves a word from "New" to "Learning" to "Learned"; a wrong answer sends it back to "To review". "Review first" shows words to review and new words first.
- Your progress and missed words are saved only in this browser on this device.
Questions and answers
- How many basic English words are in the quiz?
- There are 425 basic words out of 1,356 in total. Choose "All" under "Level" to draw questions from every word.
- Is this a word list for a specific exam?
- No. The list contains common general words used in everyday life and study. It does not follow any exam or textbook word list.
- Can I practise spelling?
- Yes. "Spell the word" asks you to type the word from its meaning, and "Listen and type" asks you to type the word you hear. A hint shows an example sentence and the first letter.
- Can I review only the words I got wrong?
- Missed words are collected automatically. Choose "Missed words only" under "Which words" to practise them; a word leaves the list when you answer it correctly.
