Final Grade Calculator
What you need on the final exam to finish with the grade you want
Loading the tool…
Enter your current course grade and the weight of the final exam, and the calculator shows the score you need on the final to reach the course grade you want. Use it before the exam to see whether a goal is realistic and what each letter grade requires.
How to use
- Enter your grade before the final in "Current grade" as a percentage.
- Enter the "Final exam weight" and the "Grade you want"; "You need on the final" appears at once.
- Check the "Score needed for each grade" table for A, B, C and D. Change the cutoffs under "Edit grade cutoffs".
- Under "What if I score…", move the score to preview your course grade and letter.
How it works
- Course grade = current grade × (1 − weight) + final score × weight. Score needed = (target − current grade × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight.
- It assumes your current grade already covers everything except the final. If homework or other work is still to come, the result can change.
- A needed score above 100% is shown as "Not reachable", and one at or below 0% as "Already secured". The grade cutoffs (A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60 by default) are saved on this device.
Questions and answers
- What do I need on my final exam?
- With a current grade of 88%, a final worth 25% and a goal of 90%, you need (90 − 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 96%.
- Where do I find the final exam weight?
- Use the percentage for the final exam in your syllabus. If the final counts for 30%, enter 30.
- Can I reach my goal even with a zero on the final?
- Yes, if "Course grade if you score 0%" is already at or above your goal. The page then shows "Already secured".
