GPA Calculator
Calculate semester and cumulative GPA on the 4.0 scale, weighted or unweighted
Loading the tool…
Calculates semester and cumulative GPA on the US 4.0 scale from each course's credits and grade, with an optional weighted GPA for Honors, AP and IB classes.
How to use
- For each course, enter the "Course" name, "Credits" and "Grade", and set the "Type" if it is Honors or AP / IB.
- Press "Add course" or "Add semester" for more rows; the "Cumulative GPA" updates at once.
- To include earlier semesters, enter "Cumulative GPA so far" and "Credits so far" under "Earlier record (optional)".
- Under "Target", enter a "Target cumulative GPA" and "Credits next semester" to see the GPA you need.
How it works
- GPA = total quality points ÷ graded credits, where quality points = grade points × credits. Rows without a grade are ignored.
- The default scale runs from A 4.0, A− 3.7 and B+ 3.3 down to F 0, from a university registrar's table. "A+ counts as" can be 4.0 or 4.3, and all values are editable under "Edit grade points".
- With "Weighted GPA (Honors, AP, IB bonus)" on, Honors adds 0.5 and AP / IB adds 1.0 by default. No bonus is added to an F.
- Your courses are saved in this browser on this device, and "Copy link" makes a link that carries them.
Questions and answers
- How do I calculate my GPA?
- Multiply each grade's points by the course credits, add the results and divide by the total credits. An A− in 3 credits and a B+ in 4 credits give (11.1 + 13.2) ÷ 7 = 3.47.
- What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
- Unweighted GPA uses the same points for every class. Weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes; with the default +1.0, an A in an AP class counts as 5.0.
- How do I calculate cumulative GPA with my previous GPA?
- Enter your cumulative GPA and credits so far under "Earlier record (optional)". They are combined with the semesters you enter, weighted by credits.
- Is an A+ worth 4.0 or 4.3?
- It depends on the school; many count it as 4.0 and some as 4.3. Choose the value under "A+ counts as".
