Grade Calculator (Weighted)

Work out your current grade from assignment, midterm and final scores and their weights

Loading the tool…

Works out your current weighted grade when assignments, quizzes and exams count for different shares of the course, and the average you need on what is left to reach a target.

How to use

  1. On each row, enter the "Assessment", the "Score" (85 or 18/20) and the "Weight" in percent.
  2. Leave the score empty for assessments not taken yet. For many homework scores, switch on "Group several scores" and separate them with commas.
  3. Read the "Current weighted average (graded items)", "Current grade", "Points secured" and "Highest possible grade".
  4. Enter a "Target final grade" to see the average needed on the remaining weight. Change the letter cutoffs under "Edit grade cutoffs".

How it works

Questions and answers

How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each score by its weight, add the results and divide by the sum of the weights. Homework at 20% scoring 90 and a midterm at 30% scoring 80 give (20 × 90 + 30 × 80) ÷ 50 = 84.
What do I need on the final exam?
In the example above, with the final worth 50% and a target of 85, you need (85 × 100 − 4,200) ÷ 50 = 86. The "Target final grade" field gives the same value.
How do I enter a score that is not out of 100?
Write the points and the maximum with a slash, such as 18/20, which counts as 90%.
Can I track several courses?
Use "Add course". Each course keeps its own assessments and cutoffs.
