Typing Speed Test
Type the passage and get your words per minute and accuracy
Loading the tool…
A typing speed test: type the passage shown on screen and get your words per minute (WPM) and accuracy. Passages that are mostly Korean are measured in keystrokes per minute, and passages in Japanese or Chinese in characters per minute.
How to use
- Under "Mode", choose "Timed" (15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds) or "Whole passage".
- Under "Text", choose "Short", "Long" or "My text". For your own text, type it under "Text to practise" and press "Practise this text".
- The clock starts when you start typing. Correct and wrong characters are marked as you go.
- At the end, the result and a "Speed by second" chart appear. Press Tab or "Restart" to try again, or "Another text" for a new passage.
How it works
- WPM counts 5 characters, spaces included, as one word. Net WPM subtracts uncorrected errors per minute from gross WPM.
- Accuracy is the share of typed characters that were right the first time, so fixed errors still count against it.
- Characters still being composed in an input method are not counted as errors, and pasting is turned off.
- This is for fun and practice; results depend on your keyboard, input method and screen. Your records and last 10 tests are saved in this browser.
Questions and answers
- How is WPM calculated?
- The number of characters typed is divided by 5 to get words, then divided by the minutes taken. Typing 250 characters in one minute is 50 gross WPM.
- What is the difference between net and gross WPM?
- Gross WPM counts every character you typed. Net WPM subtracts the errors you did not fix, so it is never higher than gross WPM.
- Can I practise with my own text?
- Yes. Choose "My text", type or paste the text into "Text to practise" and press "Practise this text". Line breaks become spaces.
- Does fixing a mistake raise my accuracy?
- No. Accuracy counts errors you fixed as well, so it stays the same. A fixed character is removed from "Errors left", which raises net WPM.
