Yut Nori (Korean Board Game)
Throw the four sticks and race your tokens around the board in this traditional Korean game
Loading the tool…
Yut nori is a traditional Korean board game: throw four sticks, move your tokens by the result, and be the first team to bring all tokens home. Two to four teams can share one device, or you can play the computer.
How to use
- Under "Settings", choose the "Teams", "Opponents" and "Tokens per team", and switch on "Use back-do" if you want it.
- Press "Throw the sticks". A yut, a mo or a capture gives you "Throw again".
- When your throws are done, tap a token on the board or a waiting token. The stations it can reach show the result names; tap one to move.
- Press "Undo" to take back your last moves before the next throw.
How it works
- One flat side up is do (1 step), two is gae (2), three is geol (3), four is yut (4), and none is mo (5). Collected results can be used in any order on any token.
- The board has 29 stations. A token that stops exactly on the top-right or top-left corner, or on the centre, takes a shortcut on its next move. A token goes home only by moving past the start.
- A token that stops on its own team's token stacks with it; one that stops on an opposing token captures it and sends it back.
- The chance of a stick landing flat side up can be changed in the settings. The game is saved in this browser.
Questions and answers
- What are the odds of each yut result?
- If each stick lands flat side up with a chance of 1/2, do is 1/4, gae 3/8, geol 1/4, yut 1/16 and mo 1/16. The "Chance of each result" table on the page follows the chance you set.
- How do the shortcuts work?
- A token that stops exactly on the top-right or top-left corner turns onto the diagonal on its next move. A token that only passes a corner keeps going around the edge.
- What is back-do?
- A house rule: when only the marked stick is flat side up, the token moves one step back. It is used only with "Use back-do" on.
