Play peg solitaire or get the answer when a real board has you stuck: the 15-hole triangle peg game found on many restaurant tables, the English 33-hole cross and the European 37-hole board.
How to use
- Under "Board", choose "Triangle (15)", "English (33)" or "European (37)". "Choose the starting hole" sets the empty hole.
- For a game already in progress, choose "Set up my board" and tap holes until the pegs match your board.
- Under "Last peg", keep "Anywhere" or choose "In a chosen hole" and tap the hole where the last peg must end.
- Press "Solve" or "Solve from here" and step through the jumps with "Play", "Previous" and "Next".
- While playing, "Hint: next jump only" shows one jump and "Can this still be solved?" checks whether one peg is still possible.
How it works
- A peg jumps over a neighbouring peg into the empty hole behind it, and the jumped peg is removed. On the triangle, jumps also go diagonally.
- The solver is a depth-first search that remembers dead positions, treats mirror images and turns as one, and rules out hopeless positions early by counting pegs. Triangle answers are always complete; on larger boards a search stops after 20 seconds and says so.
- Everything runs on this device. Records and the current game are saved only in this browser.
Questions and answers
- How do you solve the triangle peg game with 15 holes
- Choose "Triangle (15)", press "Choose the starting hole", tap the empty hole of your board and press "Solve from here". Every starting hole can be finished with one peg in 13 jumps.
- Can the last peg end in the hole that started empty
- On the triangle, yes for 12 of the 15 holes. For the three inner holes (5, 8 and 9) it is impossible; the page then shows a one-peg ending elsewhere.
- Is every English peg solitaire start solvable
- Yes. From any single empty hole the 33-hole board can be reduced to one peg in 31 jumps; from the centre start the last peg can also end in the centre.
- Why can the European board not be finished from the centre
- Counting pegs by position class proves that one peg is impossible when the centre of the 37-hole board starts empty. Choose another starting hole.
