Debate Timer
A big-screen timer that runs through each speech of a debate, with prep time for each side
Loading the tool…
Runs a whole debate on one screen: the current speech and side, the time left in large digits, the next speech and a prep-time bank for each side, for a projector or a large screen.
How to use
- Choose a debate under "Format"; the order of speeches and their times appear under "Order of speeches".
- Change any speech name, side or time in the list, or press "Add speech".
- Press "Full screen", then "Start" when the first speaker begins, and "Next" when the speech ends.
- When a side asks for prep time, press its prep button (for example "Pro prep 2:00"); press it again to stop and return to the speech.
How it works
- Time is calculated from the device clock, so it stays correct when the tab is in the background.
- The digits turn orange at 1 minute and red at 30 seconds; after zero the clock counts overtime as +0:15.
- Preset times follow the National Speech & Debate Association (Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, Policy) and the World Universities Debating Championship rules (British Parliamentary). The classroom and free formats are examples. Edited orders stay on this device.
Questions and answers
- How long is each speech in Lincoln-Douglas debate?
- Constructives of 6 (affirmative) and 7 minutes (negative), two 3-minute cross-examinations, rebuttals of 4, 6 and 3 minutes, and 4 minutes of prep per debater.
- What is protected time in British Parliamentary debate?
- The first and last minute of each 7-minute speech, when points of information may not be offered. Tick "Show protected time" to see this on screen.
- Does the timer keep running if I switch to another tab?
- Yes. The time left is worked out from the clock, so it is right when you return, and the end chime still sounds.
- Can I control it with a keyboard or a presentation clicker?
- Yes. Space starts and pauses, the right arrow or Page Down goes to the next speech, the left arrow or Page Up goes back, and 1 and 2 start prep time.
