Rubric Maker
Build a grading rubric of criteria and levels, print it and total each student's score
Loading the tool…
Builds a grading rubric of criteria and levels, prints it, and totals each student's score as you click a level for every criterion. Use it to set and apply clear criteria for essays, presentations, projects and other assignments.
How to use
- On the "Build" tab, choose a template under "Start from", such as writing or presentation, and press "Use template".
- Change the table with "Add criterion" and "Add level", and edit each cell's description, the "Level points" and the "Weight".
- On the "Print" tab, choose "Student handout", "Scoring sheet" or "Several per page" and print.
- On the "Score" tab, paste names into "Class list", then click a level for each criterion; the total and scaled score appear.
- Move the results with "Copy CSV" or "Copy table (for spreadsheets)", or press "Print sheets for all students".
How it works
- A cell scores level points × weight. A number typed under a cell is used instead. A criterion is worth its highest cell score.
- Scaled score = total ÷ maximum total × "Scale total to". When that value is 0, no scaling is done.
- The rubric, names and scores are saved only in this browser on this device. Use "Save file (JSON)" to move them to another device.
Questions and answers
- What is a rubric?
- A scoring guide with the criteria in rows and the levels of quality in columns, and a description of what each level looks like. Students see what is expected, and every piece of work is graded against the same descriptions.
- Can criteria be worth different points?
- Yes. Type the points under each cell, for example 10, 7 and 4, and they replace level points × weight for that criterion.
- How do I turn the total into a score out of 100?
- Enter 100 in "Scale total to". If the maximum total is 16 and a student has 12, the scaled score is 75.
- Are student names sent anywhere?
- No. The class list and scores stay in this browser, and "Clear list and scores" deletes them.
