Spelling Test Maker
Enter your word list and the page reads each word aloud for a spelling test, with printable answer sheets
Loading the tool…
Gives a spelling test from your own word list: the device reads each word aloud with its built-in voices, and the page prints answer sheets, the word list and an answer key. Pupils can also practise alone and get each word checked.
How to use
- Type one word or sentence per line under "Word list"; add an example sentence after a | sign if you want it read too.
- Choose a "Voice", the "Speed" and the "Times each item is read".
- On "Read aloud", press "Listen" for each item, or "Read all automatically" to go through the list with a pause for writing.
- Under "Print", choose "Answer sheet", "Word list" or "Answer key" and press "Print". Pupils can use "Practise alone" to type each word and see the mistakes.
How it works
- Speech comes from the voices installed on the device or browser. If there is no voice for the language of the list, the page says so and shows each item large so the teacher can read it.
- In practice mode, capital letters and accents written another way (é typed as e + accent) count as the same; you choose whether spaces and punctuation must match.
- With "Mix up the order", the order number fixes the order, so the printed answer key matches the test. Saved lists stay in this browser on this device.
Questions and answers
- Why does the page not read the words aloud?
- The device has no speech voice for that language, or the browser does not support speech. Add a voice in the system language settings and reload the page, or tick "I read the words myself".
- How many times should each word be said in a spelling test?
- Twice is common: once alone, once after the example sentence. Choose 1, 2 or 3 under "Times each item is read".
- Can I keep a separate list for each week?
- Yes. Open "Saved lists", type a name and press "Save"; choose it later and press "Open".
- Does it work without an internet connection?
- The page itself needs no connection once loaded. Some browsers offer online voices that do need one; voices installed on the device work offline.
