Number Line Generator
Draw number lines with your range and steps, and print them as fill-in-the-blank worksheets
Loading the tool…
Draws number lines with your range and tick step, and prints them as worksheets with some numbers left blank, plus an answer key. It also draws fraction, decimal and negative number lines, inequality intervals and jump arrows.
How to use
- Enter "Start", "End" and "Big tick step", and set "Small tick parts" to split each big step.
- Choose a "Number type". With "Numbers shown" set to "Random blanks", each line gets as many empty boxes as "Blanks per line".
- If needed, fill in "Points", "Interval (inequality)" or "Jumps" as in the examples.
- Set "Lines per sheet" and "Line length", then press "Print". With "Answer key" on, an extra page shows the answers in red.
How it works
- Tick values are calculated as fractions, so steps such as 0.1 do not drift.
- A sheet holds 1 to 12 lines of 40 to 400 mm, shortened to fit the paper if needed. One line can have up to 400 ticks.
- The same "Sheet code (seed)" gives the same blanks and answer key again. On the "On screen" tab, drag the yellow dot to read values.
Questions and answers
- How do I make a fraction number line?
- Choose "Fractions" and enter a step such as 1/4. From 0 to 2 this gives 9 ticks, and with "Mixed numbers" on, 5/4 is shown as 1 1/4.
- Can it show negative numbers?
- Yes. Enter -5 as the start and 5 as the end, and 0 sits in the middle.
- How do I show an inequality on a number line?
- Type it in "Interval (inequality)", for example -1 < x <= 3. An end with an equals sign gets a filled dot, an end without one an open dot, and a side with no end, as in x > 2, becomes an arrow.
- How do I draw jump arrows?
- Type 3 + 4 in "Jumps" for a +4 arrow from 3 to 7, or 0 + 2 + 2 + 2 for three jumps of 2.
