Random Seating Chart
Place a class list into seats at random
Loading the tool…
Places a class list into the seats of a classroom plan at random, while keeping certain students apart, putting some at the front and leaving fixed seats where they are.
How to use
- Under "Classroom", set "Rows" and "Seats per row" (1 to 12 each) and the "Desk groups". To remove unused seats, choose "Turn seats on/off" and tap them.
- Paste the class list into "Names, one per line". Adding M or F after a name allows mixing boys and girls at shared desks.
- If needed, add rules such as "Keep apart", "Sit near the front" or "Mix boys and girls at shared desks".
- Press "Assign seats". In the result, tap two seats one after the other to swap them.
- Use "Print" or "Save as image" to export the chart, and enter a class name and press "Save" to keep it.
How it works
- When a rule cannot be met, the page says which rule and how many cases remain.
- A student set with "Fix a student" gets the same seat every time. "Seen from" flips the plan to the teacher's side.
- The class list and saved classes are kept only in this browser on this device.
Questions and answers
- Can I keep two students apart?
- Write one pair per line in "Keep apart", such as Liam - Noah. They will not sit next to each other, in front of or behind each other, or diagonally.
- Can it mix boys and girls at shared desks?
- Add M or F after each name and turn on the mixing rule. It works when desks are in groups of 2 or 4, and the page reports any desks it could not mix.
- What happens if there are more students than seats?
- The page lists the students without a seat. Add rows or seats, or turn switched-off seats back on.
- Can I show the draw on the classroom screen?
- Choose "Shuffle names" or "One by one" under "Effect", press "Full screen", then "Assign seats". The Enter key also assigns seats.
